An Automatic Calibration Method Based on Feature Point Matching for the Cooperation of Wide-Angle and Pan-tilt-Zoom Cameras

چکیده
Wide-angle cameras are used to monitor large open areas, but moving objects on the image are often too small to view in detail. However, pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras have zooming capabilities that can be used to capture close-up images of a moving object. Therefore, the cooperation of these two types of cameras has been studied extensively in recent years. A calibration method is necessary to achieve the above cooperation. For any coordinate on the image plane of a wide-angle camera, this calibration method is needed to obtain the corresponding pan, tilt, and zoom values, known as the point correspondence of the PTZ camera. It is inconvenient to manually establish point correspondences, as shown in previous studies. Therefore, an automatic calibration method is proposed in this paper. The method is mainly based on the matching of feature points on the images of wide-angle and PTZ cameras. A feature point (FP) is extracted based on several edge operators derived from a 2D Gaussian smoothing function. A two-phase FP match is then designed to obtain the point correspondences. In the study of a prototype for capturing close-up images of moving objects, the calibration process took approximately 7 minutes for 44 FPs. The average successful rate of the capturing tasks was 82 percent. It shows that the automatic calibration method is feasible for the cooperation of wide-angle and PTZ cameras.

A New Calibration Method and its Application for the Cooperation of Wide-Angle and Pan-Tilt-Zoom Cameras
In this study, we present a new calibration method for the cooperation of wide-angle and pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras. A wide-angle camera enables the surveillance of a large area. However, it may be difficult to perceive the detail of an object. On the other hand, a PTZ camera enables the surveillance of the object detail. However, its view is limited when the camera zooms on a specific object....
متن کاملA Two-point Method for PTZ Camera Calibration in Sports
Calibrating narrow field of view soccer cameras is challenging because there are very few field markings in the image. Unlike previous solutions, we propose a two-point method, which requires only two point correspondences given the prior knowledge of base location and orientation of a pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) camera. We deploy this new calibration method to annotate pan-tilt-zoom data from soccer v...
متن کاملAuto-Calibration of Pan-Tilt Cameras Including Radial Distortion and Zoom
Although there are intrinsic advantages of using pan-tilt-zoom cameras their application in automatic surveillance systems is still scarce. The difficulty of creating background models for moving cameras and the difficulty of keeping fitted pose and optical geometrical projection models are key reasons for the limited use of pan-tilt-zoom cameras. Geometric calibration is a useful tool to overc...

Pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras are one of the advanced security cameras in the market. These cameras have the ability to cover a very far field and can acquire high resolution of images. These cameras are deployed mainly for perimeter surveillance applications where the security guards have to monitor the intruders from a long distance. Although there are intrinsic advantages of using pan-tilt-zoo...

Pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras have been widely used in recent years for monitoring and surveillance applications. These cameras provide flexible view selection as well as a wider observation range. This makes them suitable for vision-based traffic monitoring and enforcement systems. To employ PTZ cameras for image measurement applications, one first needs to calibrate the camera to obtain meaning...
